SUMMARY:St. Lawrence River Institute: Science & Nature on Tap
DESCRIPTION:Researching the Genetics behind Devastating Disease –\n“The Science of Finding a Cure” at next Science & Nature on Tap \nCornwall\, ON – On Wednesday\, February 3rd at 7 pm Science and Nature on Tap at Schnitzel’s will explore the cutting edge of medical research in Canada by highlighting the work of a local medical research scientist. Dr. Pearl Campbell is a scientist has spent a career working to combat devastating diseases through scientific investigation. She is using the key of the human genome to unlock the mystery surrounding some of our most challenging diseases. A resident of South Glengarry\, Dr. Campbell is Director of Stem Core Laboratories with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. Her research revolves around the concept that stem cell dysfunction lies at the very heart of today’s most devastating illnesses such as cancer\, type I diabetes\, cardiac disease\, Parkinson’s\, Muscular Dystrophy\, and Alzheimer’s. \nGraduating from the John Hopkins University in Baltimore\, Maryland with a MS in Biotechnology\, Dr. Campbell worked at the renowned John Hopkins School of Medicine serving as a Senior Research Technician. A move north of the border in 1996 led her to Directorship of the Regional Genomics Centre in London\, Ontario. She earned her Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Medicine from the Ottawa University and for the last 13 years she has served as Director of Stem Core Laboratories at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute. \nDr. Campbell says\, “The use of stem cells for basic discovery and in regenerative therapy presents an opportunity to transform how medicine is practiced and for pharmaceutical intervention.” She looks forward to discussing how this modern revolution in genetics is being used to advance research into disease and the personalization of medicine. \nThis free session\, hosted by the St. Lawrence Institute of Environmental Sciences\, is held at Schnitzels European Flavours but spaces are limited. If you would like more information or to reserve a seat please call (613) 936-6620 or e-mail kcooper@riverinstitute.ca or visit the River Institute website at www.riverinstitute.ca. \n– 30 – \nDownload the PDF overview here. \nMedia Contact: \nKaren Douglass Cooper\nCommunications / Community Outreach Officer\nRemedial Action Plan Coordinator\nSt. Lawrence River (Cornwall)\nSt. Lawrence River Institute of\nEnvironmental Sciences\n2 St. Lawrence Drive\nCornwall\, ON K6H 4Z1\nkcooper@riverinstitute.ca\nwww.riverinstitute.ca\n(613) 936-6620 (ext.229) \n
